MEMBER-TO-MEMBER: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR AUG. 28, 2015

From Ryan Craig Executive Director
Logan County Chamber of Commerce
ryancraig@loganchamber.com

Above is your invitation to the 7th Logan County Chamber of Commerce Annual Women in Business Luncheon. The theme this year is WOMEN IN HOMETOWN HISTORY and the featured speaker is Evelyn Richardson.
Evelyn dropped by the office today and told me just a little about what she was going to speak about and if her speech was the only thing we were going to do next Thursday, Sept. 3, starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Logan County Extension Facility, then it would be more than worth it. We have had a big block of tickets sold, but we want a sell-out, so woman or man, you should want to come out and celebrate what women have done (hint: It’s a lot!) for the Logan County business community.

Also, and I can’t say this enough, we will have a nacho bar. A NACHO BAR, PEOPLE!
There are many ways to reserve your spot, but we need you to do it by 10 a.m. next Tuesday morning (Sept. 1). You can email Assistant Director Amanda Baker at amanda@loganchamber.com or call 270-726-2206, and since we now can take credit cards for events, you can do it all without having to leave the place where you are reading this!

Thanks to our sponsors for this event: Logan Eye Care Center, Country Wide Realty, Creative Canvas by You/The Loft and the Russellville Electric Plant Board.
Let’s get as many as we can out to the luncheon to hear what I know will be (literally) an historic event … and, to that nacho bar.

SIGN UP YOUR DAUGHTER, GRANDDAUGHTER NOW FOR QUEEN’S PAGEANT
There is less than a month before the kick-off event of the 2015 Logan County Tobacco and Heritage Festival and we are looking for the best, brightest and most beautiful young ladies Logan County has to offer to participate in the Festival’s Queen’s Pageant, sponsored by the Logan County Chamber of Commerce, Trophies to Go, Amtech, Shaker Realty and Pioneer Credit.

The Pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the deGraffenried Auditorium and we hope to have a stage full. The pageant is open to all high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors who are residents of Logan County. The cost is $25 and you can pick up the pageant application form at the Logan County Chamber Office. The deadline to apply is Sept. 18.
The big news this year out of the pageant is that we raised the scholarship money to $1,000. So, that means the winner gets roses, a tiara and a good chunk of change toward her education!

FIRST SOUTHERN BANK COFFEE AND NETWORKING
There will be a Coffee and Networking event on Sept. 9 at First Southern Bank, located at the new Russellville location, from 7-8:30 a.m.  Be there or be a plane figure with four equal straight sides and four right angles!

STRATEGIC PLAN HAS BEEN SET
In an important step that took months of planning and hard work, the Logan County Chamber Board of Directors has finalized the Chamber’s Strategic Plan. A big thanks to those who helped, gave advice and listened to the drafts (there were many) before we settled on the document. Now, just because we’ve written one and adopted it doesn’t mean it is to be placed on a shelf and gather dust, this is a living document subject to change, addition, subtraction as it becomes our guide from day-to-day over the next three to five years.

Here is the Chamber’s Strategic Plan:

LOGAN COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE STRATEGIC PLAN
MISSION STATEMENT:
The mission of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce is to promote and develop strong businesses, and foster a more vibrant economy through leadership, education, governmental affairs, and community development, resulting in a better quality of life for all Logan Countians.

VISION PLAN:

  • To support and inform our membership and be attentive to the needs of those we serve.
  • To be a champion of Logan County businesses and to recognize and publicize innovation, success and growth of those businesses.
  • To collaborate with the business community, local, state, and federal governments, and other like-minded organizations in accomplishing growth, and sustainable economic goals.
  • To enhance our quality of life.

LOGAN COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE STRATEGIC GOALS
GOAL ONE MEMBERSHIP SERVICE AND DEVELOPMENT

Objective: To recruit 20 new members each year (approx. 8 percent growth) with a retention rate of 94 percent of the current membership. This should give the Chamber 2-4 percent (depending on renewals) net membership growth each year. Also, the Chamber should have a better membership public relations campaign for renewals instead of just sending out renewal invoices each year.
Strategies:

  • Seek ways — such as TV, radio and other media (print, electronic and social) — to make the Chamber more visible to the membership and to Logan County.
  • Look for more member-added benefits for those who belong or are considering joining the Logan County Chamber of Commerce. Such benefits would be listed in a prominent place and given directly to members and would include items such as the weekly newsletter, an annual report, the Size-Up tool for business growth, promotional services such as advertising for events or the promotional videos and be an advocate and source of legislative (local, state and national) information, etc.
  • Continue new, more aggressive policies put in place earlier this year by the board which give a ribbon-cutting celebration to all new or expanding businesses regardless if they are members of the Chamber or not. Also, the use of 1-year celebrations for new business support and Coffee (or Tea) and Networking for existing businesses. At some point the Chamber should consider a quarterly networking event with a well-known guest speaker and invite the public to the event as well as the membership.
  • The Executive Director will continue visits of membership and will support the new Ambassador Visitation Project which is underway.

GOAL TWO — DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A RETAIL INITIATIVE FOR RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION IN LOGAN COUNTY
Objective: To seek, find and help develop retail for Logan County. Working alongside a committee selected by the board of directors, the executive director will put in place an initiative for retail recruitment and retention.

Strategies:

·        Gather as much information as possible from metrics (such as Size-up) and other sources provided by the TVA and the ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers) and local sources to develop strategies for retail recruitment for Logan County.

·        Scout, recognize and map out possible sites for retail development in Logan County. Keep a database with as much information as possible with each site.

·        Through metrics, identify and approach key retailers who have interest in Logan County or have placed retail in similar markets.

·        On TVA consultant’s advice, executive director to visit Chattanooga (largest Gigabit City in the South) and find ways to recruit small tech businesses to only Gigabit City in Kentucky — Russellville. Actively recruit small, upcoming game, software designers and programmers to join a modified “Gigabit” incubator in Russellville to help develop a miniature high-tech conclave in Russellville.

GOAL THREE — EVENTS AND PROMOTIONS.
Objective: To continue to build the Chamber and Member profile through events and various promotions.

Strategies:

·        Continue to facilitate, promote and build upon the past successes of the Annual Tobacco and Heritage Festival.

·        Continue to have Annual Dinner to celebrate membership and the accomplishments of the business community in Logan County.

·        Continue to have Women in Business celebration each year.

·        Continue to plan, facilitate and promote Leadership Logan each year.

·        Implement, facilitate, evaluate and promote Youth Leadership Program (2015-2016 Class will be inaugural year).

·        Continue to promote events though all means available: Our newsletter; daily on the Chamber Chat TV show with Chamber membership on EPB SmartTV3; monthly program on WRUS; and in articles in the newspaper.

GOAL FOUR — DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT NEW PROGRAMS
Objective: To develop and implement new programs to give the membership and Logan County services such as advocacy, business development, workforce development, education, and Chamber Membership interaction/relations.

Strategies:

·        Educational programs (such as customer service and business development training seminars).

·        Advocate for E-911 reform concerning billing on cell phones. Counties are showing massive loss of funding as more and more people get rid of land lines. We feel the issue affects government, citizens and businesses in higher costs for the most basic of services.

·        Millennial interviews: A series of intense interviews with Millennials to determine what Logan County needs to retain and attract a younger, more skilled workforce. (Estimated completion by spring 2016.)

·        Work on completing last phase of “Baseball Park Initiative” with white paper to be completed and recommendations made to the public. (Estimated completion by October 2015.)

·        To develop using graphics, information and a story format a product to help membership retention. The product would be released with and as part of the annual invoices.

·        To continue to help support, publicize and promote the Shop Local programs throughout the year, especially the Shop Local Sunday program following Thanksgiving in late November each year.

That is all for this week. Hope to see you at the Women in Business Luncheon next Thursday!

MEMBER-TO-MEMBER: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR AUG. 21, 2015

From Ryan Craig Executive Director
Logan County Chamber of Commerce
ryancraig@loganchamber.com

“Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” — Vince Lombardi

“Leaders must wake people out of inertia. They must get people excited about something they’ve never seen before, something that does not yet exist.” — Rosabeth Moss Kanter

Above are two of my favorite quotes about leadership and especially the famous statement that leaders are made and not born. That is why a few months ago the Chamber Board of Directors gave the go-ahead to create a youth version of our Leadership Logan program. The first class will consist of students from Russellville and Logan County high schools and will be exposed to a similar program as the (adult) Leadership Logan. The idea is to expose the students to Logan County in ways and opportunities they may not be aware of because how are we supposed to prepare leaders for tomorrow if they don’t have knowledge about the place and people they are supposed to lead?
The selections have been made and we are proud to announce the first ever Youth Leadership Logan Class. I think we can all be proud of this program and of these students.

Logan County High School selections: Kennedy Campbell, Anjali Evans, Caroline Baker, Shelby Hardison, John Mark Page, Katherine Brooks, Austin Rayno, Jessalyn Robey, Riley Wharton and Evan Hughes.

Russellville High School selections: Luci Suiter, Phillip Wilkerson, Kristen Vanzant, Dillon Porter, Katie Paul, Emma McReynolds, TaJada Hampton, Skyler Hale, Ashlee Gilbert and William Mullen.
Congratulations to all of the students. It is my hope the students get all they can from this program and in turn give back their skills and leadership to Logan County and its future.

The Orientation/History Day Youth Leadership Logan will be held Sept. 15 at the Chamber Office. They will meet monthly through April with themes of Agricultural Day, Government Day, Small Business Day, Industry Day and Historic Day. The graduation is set for April 12, 2016.

“Leaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them.” — John C. Maxwell

RIBBON CUTTING FOR LEVINE GROUP

Trevor Coe, a Certified Financial Planner, and the Levine Group Inc. Russellville office had a great turnout Wednesday for the ribbon-cutting celebrating the business’ new location. There was good food, good weather (it didn’t rain until after the ribbon was cut!) and good fellowship. If you need a financial planner go out and see Trevor and he will take care of you.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS SEPT. 3

Don’t delay getting your tickets for the Women in Business Luncheon on Sept. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Logan County Extension Facility. The cost is $15. The speaker this year is Evelyn Richardson, who will discuss the role women have played in businesses in Logan County. We have a full house each year, so get your tickets now! Call Amanda at the Chamber at 270-776-2206.

FIRST SOUTHERN BANK COFFEE AND NETWORKING
Also, in September there will be a Coffee and Networking event on Sept. 9 at First Southern Bank, located at the new Russellville location, from 7-8:30 a.m.

LEADERSHIP LOGAN HAS FIRST BIG DAY
Leadership Logan toured the J&D Milk operation during Agriculture Day.

Last week was the orientation, but this week the (Adult) Leadership Logan had their first class and it was Agriculture Day. The stops on the nearly day-long tour included A&W Sod, Robey Dairy, Walnut Grove Farms, J&D Milk, and Poore’s Nursery. A big thanks to all the agri-businesses who helped us and thanks to Logan County Cooperative Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent Leann Martin, who led the tour!

So that’s all for this week, have a great weekend and let me leave you with an inspirational quote that actually came from my dad — barber, farmer and philosopher — Richard Craig:

IF THE TIGER IS GROWLING IN THE BUSH, DON’T SAY, “HERE, KITTY, KITTY …”

Words to live by …

MEMBER-TO-MEMBER: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR AUG. 14, 2015

From Ryan Craig Executive Director
Logan County Chamber of Commerce
ryancraig@loganchamber.com
It was a day of icebreakers. Eggs were dropped in protective chambers of a section of newspaper, five straws and three feet of Scotch tape, but alas, none survived the journey through gravity to the ground. There were plenty of get-to-know-you games — including two truths and a lie, which included a mini-class on finding people’s ticks when they are lying! On Thursday, 2015 Chamber President Shane Hayes facilitated the orientation for the brand new Leadership Logan Class and he made it fun and interesting. Now that they “know” each other better, they head into the first official class next week as a group and not a bunch of strangers.
The 2015-2016 Leadership Logan class is a very impressive group of people and next Thursday they will begin the journey of discovering Logan County in a way that only Leadership Logan can bring. Here are the class members for this year: Gary Bickett, Ben Kemplin, Melanie Manley, Hope Strode, Ryan Coleman, Crystal Cavanah, Barry Goley, Brad Rogers, Marius Beard, James Justice, Timothy Nugent, Penni Nugent, Amanda Baker, Rachel Barnett, Nicholas Scarbrough, Debbie Tolladay and Thadd Kistler.

Good luck to this year’s Leadership Logan class!

AIRPORT GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY FOR NEW RUNWAY ADDITION

There was a great crowd Tuesday for the ground breaking ceremony for the Russellville/Logan County Airport’s runway extension. Included in the ceremony were representatives from Sen. Rand Paul’s state office and U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield’s state office.  The Russellville-Logan County Airport Board received a federal grant of $367,957.00 for the county’s airport. The award, given by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), will fund the design of a runway extension, which will extend the runway to 4,500 feet.  The funding will also help acquire approximately 11 acres of land.

COFFEE AND NETWORKING AT DAYMAR COLLEGE

A great time was had by all Tuesday — Tuesday was a busy day! — as the great staff and students at Daymar College hosted a Coffee and Networking lunch, and what a lunch it was! If you missed it, then your taste buds will hate you for it. We also were given a tour of Daymar’s impressive facility. Thanks to Daymar College for their support of the community and the Chamber.

RIBBON CUTTING FOR LEVINE GROUP NEXT WEDNESDAY
The Chamber will be having a ribbon-cutting celebration for Trevor Coe, a Certified Financial Planner, and the Levine Group Inc. Russellville office on Aug. 19 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. The ribbon cutting is scheduled for 8 a.m. The Levine Group is located at 105 Robins Way (Suite 205) Russellville. Let’s all come out and support Trevor — who might be one of the smartest people I’ve ever met — and help him celebrate his new location.

Also, Active Day of Russellville will be having an Open House to celebrate 16 years of service to Logan and surrounding counties on Monday, August 17. The community is invited to come to the center between 11 a.m. and 1p.m. for a tour, visit with the staff and clients, refreshments and entertainment. The center is located at 3239 Lewisburg Road, between Hunter's Den and the water tower.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS SEPT. 3

We are excited to announce the Women in Business Luncheon will be on Sept.

CHAMBER COMPLETES STRATEGIC PLAN
With the approval of the last two goal sets, the Logan County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has completed the Chamber’s 2015-2016 Strategic Plan. We will have more at a later date, but the board should be applauded for, in writing, saying where we are headed as a Chamber.

That's all for this week. Have a great weekend!

MEMBER-TO-MEMBER: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR AUG. 7, 2015

From Ryan Craig Executive Director
Logan County Chamber of Commerce
ryancraig@loganchamber.com
A couple months ago, I attended a meeting that dealt with retaining young talent and the message I took away from it was that most employers look at so-called “Millennials” like a calf looks at a new barn door. Millennials (born 1982 to 1995) are now the largest age group in the workforce and will be 75 percent of the workforce by 2025.
That means that retaining the talented or hard-working younger workers is very important to the future of our local and regional workforce, the health of our businesses and the future vitality of Logan County.

What seems, from the mounds of information I’ve read and the hours of seminars I’ve sat through, to be the (perceived?) problem with Millennials is how different they are in thought, deed and action than Generation X and Baby Boomers. With Baby Boomers leaving the workforce in droves, it is time for Logan County to take a hard, long look at its future workforce and leaders and find out what needs to be done to retain and attract Millennials.
That is why the Chamber of Commerce will be taking the next six or so months to interview Millennials and perhaps some from the upcoming Generation Z and find out just what they are thinking. It is our hope, sometime in early 2016, to have a report to give to employers, civic leaders and educators in asking just what is needed to make our workforce stronger and more attractive to both internal and outside investment.

Here are a few of the sample questions: What is especially challenging for people in your age group right now? What makes a community inviting to you right now? What characteristics do you really dislike or try to avoid when choosing where to live/work/do business? And, how can your community best support you?
These are questions that the TVA asked its own Millennial employees, and the answers will surprise you. We will tailor a survey for Logan County and will be asking local employers and educators for help in, what I feel, may be a great way to shape the conversation of living, working and doing business in Logan County for decades to come.

(A big thanks to Melissa Halsell, Program Manager of TVA Economic Development for the idea.)

BIG EVENTS COMING UP FOR CHAMBER
We have a Coffee and Networking event this coming Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Daymar College, located at 206 Sam Walton Drive in Russellville. There will be a lunch served, so come out with an empty belly, a hand full of business cards and ready to network with the Daymar staff and other Chamber members!

Also, Tuesday afternoon, the Russellville-Logan County Airport will be having a ground-breaking ceremony at 2 p.m. at the airport to celebrate the upcoming addition to the length of the runway. Let’s all try to come out and support an important step in an important part of the Logan County infrastructure.

Then, the Chamber will be having a ribbon-cutting celebration for Trevor Coe, a Certified Financial Planner, and the Levine Group Inc. Russellville office on Aug. 19 from 7:30  to 8:30 a.m. The ribbon cutting is scheduled for 8 a.m. The Levine Group is located at 105 Robins Way (Suite 205) Russellville.
