MEMBER-TO-MEMBER: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR MARCH 18, 2016

From Ryan Craig
Executive Director
Logan County Chamber of Commerce
ryancraig@loganchamber.com

“I can’t believe it is almost time!” I proclaimed a little less than 24 hours after the Annual Dinner earlier this month. But, sure enough, Assistant Director Amanda Baker and I were already talking about the upcoming Logan County Tobacco and Heritage Festival. Sure enough, next week will be the first meeting for this year’s Tobacco Festival Chairs.

At the Annual Dinner earlier this month we honored Chair Paige Dockins and Co-Chair Krystal Gunderson for the awesome work they did with last year’s festival. Now Krystal takes over and will be working with Co-Chair Ben Kemplin to continue the rich tradition of the largest single event in Logan County each year.

ANNUAL DINNER COMMITTEE

An oversight from the first half of this newsletter and it might have been because I’m in the photo, but many thanks to the Annual Dinner Committee, who put on a great “Spring Fling” event. It was a sell-out and it was fun. Wish we could do one every month. (OK, that’s not true, there would be nothing left of Amanda and me if that happened!)

From left: MaryAnn Henry, Mandy Henley, Kim Reeves, Holli Brown, Ryan Craig and Amanda Baker. Not pictured: Darlene Gooch.

RIBBON CUTTING FOR PRECISION DIE CASTING

There will be a joint ribbon cutting on March 28 at 2:30 p.m. with the Chamber and LEAD to recognize the new owners of Precision Die Casting. Let’s all try to come out and support our member and an important local industry.

There also will be a ribbon cutting for the re-modeled Russellville location of Auburn Banking Company on April 19 form 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The ribbon cutting will be at 8 a.m.

BIG OL’ TATER, BIG CAUSE

April 19th will be a big spud of a day for another reason as well. The Famous Idaho Potato Tour will be coming to the Russellville Wal-Mart. (The picture is below, because describing it won’t do it justice.) There will be tours and individuals can see the 72-foot potato for themselves. The most important part of the tater tour is a board that will be out for people to sign. The Concerned Citizens of Logan County will get $1 for each signature, up to $500. So be sure to plan go to our ribbon cutting that morning and then mosey over to Wal-Mart and sign the board for a good cause.

LOGAN TO BE FEATURED IN THRIVE SPECIAL PUBLICATION

The Bowling Green Daily News is doing a series of stories profiling communities. Logan County will be profiled in mid-April. The focus will be the growth of industry, business and community that Logan County has seen recently. If you would like help sponsor the section, contact Jamie Dobbs at the Daily News. Her number is 270-783-3230.

A FEW UPCOMING EVENTS

The Messiah (Parts II and III) by George F. Handel will be presented by de Graffenried Chorale on Palm Sunday, March 20 starting at 2:30 p.m. The performance will be held at the United Methodist Temple in Russellville; Mary Beth Dowden is the director, and Susan Fox is the accompanist.

The Logan County Ministerial Association is sponsoring a Good Friday Service to be held at the United Methodist Temple on March 25 at 12:05 p.m. Brad Rogers will be preaching and various ministers from the community will be participating.

MEMBER-TO-MEMBER: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR FEB. 22, 2016

From Ryan Craig
Executive Director
Logan County Chamber of Commerce
ryancraig@loganchamber.com
Ever heard the expression GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT? Well, to mish-mash another old saying with a metaphor: THE ANNUAL DINNER TICKETS ARE SO HOT THAT THEY ARE SELLING FASTER THAN HOT CAKES UNDER A ROOSTER LAYING EGGS ON A TIN ROOF IN AUGUST!
Basically, you have a week to get your tickets to the Logan County Chamber of Commerce's Annual Dinner. The deadline to sign-up is Feb. 29.
Here is the invitation:

The Logan County Chamber of Commerce's Annual Dinner is March 3 and will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Logan County Extension facility. The theme this year will be "Spring Fling," so dress spring-y, but perhaps not too fling-y, and we promise the Board of Directors won't be dancing to Mardi Gras music this year. We may square dance, but regardless we are looking for the event to be a real hootenanny!

We expect some great entertainment while we eat. Appearing this year will be Country Music artist (and local area native) Corey Farlow. He's good. Really good.

We are so proud to say our table sponsorships are full, but if you want to be an overall sponsor for the Annual Dinner, then be sure to contact us here at the chamber by calling us at 270-726-2206.
And, if you or your business wants to donate an item to the silent auction or the auction to be held by Past Board President Brent Summers, please give Amanda Baker a call at the Chamber. Once again, thank you for all you do and we are looking forward to a good time on March 3rd!

WEBB’S RESTAURANT RIBBON CUTTING
Thanks to Webb’s Restaurant for the food and fellowship on a cold morning. We had a good ribbon cutting Feb. 12 despite snow and no school that morning. Webb’s is located on 546 South Main Street in Lewisburg. Webb’s, and the wonderful family who run it, wants to satisfy all your dining and catering needs, so call them at 270-755-5005.
LOGAN LEADERSHIP YOUTH
Even with all the snow and bad weather, the Logan Leadership Youth were able to tour local facilities such as Logan Aluminum, Summers, Kirby and Sanders Funeral Home and Creekwood Place Nursing and Rehab Center. Above, the group watches a safety film at Logan Aluminum and puts on safety clothes before going into the "hot melt" part of the plant. Look for more in coming months on the first leadership class for sophomores.
AGRICULTURAL/4-H NEWS
Here are a couple announcements our friends at the extension office wanted us to pass along:
  • There will be an informational meeting with a Kentucky Industrial Hemp Company interested in investing in Logan County producers who might want to hive Hemp farming a try. The meeting will be Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. at the Logan County Extension Office.
  • Each year the local 4-H Council and volunteers ask individuals and businesses to consider donating to the 4-H camp scholarship fund for those children who would like to go but can't afford the $200 fee. The donations in the past have changed lives and your donation would help in many ways. Call Gary Michael Templeman at 270-726-6323 for more information.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

We welcome our new members since the last newsletter:

  • New Vision Community Church, 111 McDougal Street, Russellville. Pastor Brad Rogers.
  • Staples Health Clinic, located at 104 East Main Street in Auburn. They are currently accepting new patients. The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and will soon be open on Saturdays as well. Call at 270-542-8888.

That's all for this week, see you at the Annual Dinner!!!

Very soon, in a mailbox near you, you will find this invitation:
YOU are invited to the Logan County Chamber of Commerce's Annual Dinner. It will be March 3 and will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Logan County Extension facility. The theme this year will be "Spring Fling."
Expect a fun time and we can't wait to see what those who decorate the tables will come up with this year. Also, the menu will have a real "dinner on the ground" feel with chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, pasta salad and cherry and apple cobblers and brownies. Yum and then some!!!
There will be more details coming your way in the next couple weeks! And, just in case you don't have your UK Men's Basketball schedule handy (or memorized), there is no game that night so you don't have to worry about missing tip-off or sweating out if your DVR worked.
Let's say you checked the mail and you didn't get an invitation, fear not! Consider this your invitation and call us to RSVP your spot.
Your invitations will be going out in the next couple days so be looking for them and get ready for our Spring Fling!

2016 AGRICULTURE APPRECIATION BREAKFAST A SUCCESS
Warren Beeler delights the crowd with his speech.

It was a record crowd. The food was excellent and our high-profile, much-sought-after speaker did not disappoint.
Needless to say, the 2016 Agriculture Appreciation Breakfast last Wednesday did not disappoint. Executive Director of the Kentucky Governor's Office of Agriculture Policy, Warren Beeler, gave a rousing speech about the "Future of Kentucky Agriculture." Beeler did a great job of mixing personal triumphs (and even a few failures) to tout just how efficient modern agriculture has become. Still, he said, will the farmers of the future be able to feed the world as efficiently, cleanly and abundantly has they do today? A good question, especially in such a large agriculture-driven place like Logan County, for us all to ponder.
Also, we heard an excellent speech from 2016 Chamber President Joe Hendricks encouraging those who farm and those in agri-business to become involved with the Chamber. Hendricks pointed out that the Chamber can help a farmer or agri-business through business development, advocacy and community support. I will also point out that this Chamber is the very first Kentucky Proud Chamber of Commerce in the state and second Joe's plea to those in the
agriculture community to join and become more involved in YOUR Chamber.
Special thanks goes to Mr. Beeler, The Logan County Cattlemen's Association, the Colonial Inn, and the Logan County Cooperative Extension Office. A very special thanks to our sponsors: Agri-Chem, Auburn Banking Company, BB&T, Blackford Real Estate, Brooks and Hendricks, PLLC, Electric Plant Board, Farm Credit Service, First Southern National Bank, H&R Agri Power, Hutson Ag, Lewisburg Banking Company, Logan Bethel Vet Services, Logan Co. Extension services, Logan County Farm Bureau, Moore Insurance, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Russellville Elevator, Security Seed and Chemical, and Southern States Russellville Co-op.
WEBB’S RESTAURANT RIBBON CUTTING
Don't forget to mark "MUST ATTEND" on your calendar for Webb’s Restaurant and its ribbon cutting set for Feb. 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The ribbon-cutting will start at 8 a.m.

Webb’s is located on 546 South Main Street in Lewisburg. Webb’s aims to satisfy all your dining and catering needs, so call them at 270-755-5005.
That's all for this week. Enjoy the warm weather while it lasts and because it is Kentucky always remember to keep your snow boots next to your swim trunks!!!

MEMBER-TO-MEMBER: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR JAN. 19, 2016

From Ryan Craig
Executive Director
Logan County Chamber of Commerce
ryancraig@loganchamber.com
First, OUR AGRICULTURE APPRECIATION BREAKFAST IS JAN. 27 STARTING @ 7 A.M.! CALL 270-726-2206 OR EMAIL amanda@loganchamber.com and let us know if you are coming and how many you are bringing. We want a big crowd to celebrate Logan County and its producers.
To say we are excited about our upcoming Annual Agriculture Appreciation Breakfast is an understatement. First, there is food. Great food that will fill your belly on a cold January morn (that is, assuming it is cold since this winter who can tell if we need parkas or Bermuda shorts from day to day). Then, there is a great opportunity to gather together and network with the leaders in the Logan County Agriculture and Agribusiness community. Most of all, though, you want to be at our annual breakfast for one big, important reason — Warren Beeler, who it seems is now an even bigger deal than we thought he was and we thought he was a big deal to start with!

Beeler, just last Friday, was named as the Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Agriculture Policy. Beeler has worked for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture for the past 16 years, most recently as Director of Agriculture Policy.
“Warren is a respected agricultural leader known throughout the Commonwealth, and I am excited to have him as executive director of our office of agricultural policy,” Gov. Matt Bevin said in a press release. “The Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund is critical to the Commonwealth’s agriculture and rural economic development, and we are excited to have Warren leading this effort.”

The release also noted that Beeler is a graduate of Western Kentucky University and lives in Caneyville with his wife, DeeDee.
Beeler has also served as the state Director of Livestock Marketing, Director of the Shows and Fairs Division, and Livestock Marketing Specialist. Before joining the state Department of Agriculture, he served as an Agriculture Extension Specialist at the University of Kentucky where he helped develop the first on-farm testing program for swine in Kentucky.

Director Beeler will be speaking about “The Future of Kentucky Agriculture,” and you don’t want to miss it.
Also, the Logan County Cattlemen’s Association will be cooking steaks and The Colonial Inn will be providing the eggs and other fixins. Just typing that sentence makes me hungry!

Come join us on Jan. 27.

WEBB’S NEWEST CHAMBER MEMBER
It is with a happy heart (and a grateful stomach) that we welcome Webb’s Restaurant as our newest Chamber member. Webb’s is owned by a wonderful family and I had a wonderful visit the other day with Owner/Manager Lana Richardson. Lana even fed me some pie. It was ridiculously good.

Webb’s is located on 546 South Main Street in Lewisburg and offers what Lana calls “Country Cooking.” So go by and visit Webb’s, sit a spell and fill your belly. Webb’s aims to satisfy all your dining and catering needs, so call them at 270-755-5005. We will also be having a ribbon cutting on Feb. 12 starting at 7:30 a.m., so mark your calendars!

ANNUAL DINNER SPONSORS
By avoiding some serious problems with scheduling against a certain basketball team that better start scoring in the paint or will be heading to the NIT (but, I digress) we are having our Annual Dinner a little early this year. It will be on March 3 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Logan County Extension Center. The theme this year is “Spring Fling,” and it should be a hoot.

Right now, however, we are asking for overall sponsorships of the event and table sponsors for the night. We already have had several, and if you are interested, please contact us here at the Chamber and we will be glad to set you up. Coming very soon will be your invitations in the mail, so watch for those.

ANNUAL BOARD RETREAT
The Chamber Board of Directors met last week at its annual retreat and enjoyed some really great training by an expert in non-profit board training. Kudos to Amy Cloud, of the Jessamine County Chamber of Commerce, who helped us with some excellent insights and ideas to help make a stronger board and also a stronger chamber. We also welcomed new board members, Kathy Edmonds, Marie Gamble and Mandy Henley.

The board also set the calendar for 2016. It is as follows:

               March- 8th
               April- 12th

Annual Agriculture Breakfast 2016- January 27, 7AM, Free

Women in Business Luncheon 2016- August 16, Extension Office
Tobacco and Heritage Festival 2016- October 1-8
Chamber Christmas Open House- December 1, 7:30-9:00

That’s all for this week! Be sure you have stocked up on your bread and milk ahead of the big winter storm even if you didn’t need any in the first place! It is a rule for living in Kentucky.

MEMBER-TO-MEMBER: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR JAN. 11, 2016

From Ryan Craig
Executive Director
Logan County Chamber of Commerce
ryancraig@loganchamber.com

We went out the front door of the Capitol in our Capital of Frankfort, and there was some sort of film, perhaps a brine mixture for the upcoming snow, on the brick right past the main arch. That is when my feet went north and my wallet (along with the rest of me) went south. Chamber President Joe Hendricks found himself in a precarious situation since at the moment of my descent, he was carrying a bag full of breakable gifts, including a big, beautiful souvenir plate that would have crashed much harder than I had it went down.
“Are you OK?” Joe asked me as I started to get back up.

“I suppose,” I said as I started back to my feet. “That is the strangest fall I’ve ever had. I just went down.”
Joe and I had a good laugh as we started — very slowly, and tip-toe (ish) to the gigantic mason rail to the side. About five tense minutes later, we were standing on grass trying to take pictures — and this is not a joke and really happened, so help me — of buzzards circling the dome of the Capitol.

Later, with my pride and where I landed on my wallet smarting, I proclaimed to Joe, “Well, I bet I’m not the first person to come to Frankfort and fall flat on my …”

KENTUCKY CHAMBER DAY
KENTUCKY CHAMBER DAY: From left, State Sen. Whitney Westerfield, Logan Chamber President Joe Hendricks,
State Rep. Martha Jane King, and Logan Chamber Executive Director Ryan Craig.

Joe and I were in Frankfort, and later Lexington, last Thursday for the Kentucky Chamber Day. We had a great meeting with our local legislations, State Rep. Martha Jane King and State Sen. Whitney Westerfield, and then were able to join about 1,500 other business and chamber leaders from across the state to hear rousing speeches from the new governor and Senate and House leaders. It was a great, very educational day, but like most things in Frankfort, what Joe and I learned could change faster than it takes a man in new shoes to bounce off the Capitol sidewalk!

CRI COFFEE AND NETWORKING

In our first big event of the year, there was a big crowd and it was very enjoyable to see all of our friends at Carr, Riggs and Ingram. There was a good amount of both coffee and networking at the event and thanks to CRI for getting the year off to such a good start. If your business would like to host a coffee and networking in 2016, please call us at the Chamber (270-726-2206).

CHAMBER AGRICULTURE BREAKFAST JAN. 27

ANNUAL DINNER SET FOR MARCH 3; SPONSORS NEEDED
We know with all the cold weather outside it doesn’t seem like it is time for Annual Dinner, but it is just a little over a month and a half away. This year the big event is themed “Spring Fling,” and it will be held March 3 with the doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and the program starting at 6:30 p.m. It will be a fancy picnic filled with music, awards and auctions (both silent and of the Brent Summers variety). Right now, however, we are looking for sponsors for both the Annual Dinner itself and for the tables. Expect much, much more information on the event in the coming days, and go ahead and save the date. Invitations should be in the mail very soon.

We checked and unless weather changes the date, there won’t be a University of Kentucky Basketball game that night!

WELCOME OUR NEW MEMBERS
Since our last newsletter before Christmas, we have had several new members to join. Hopefully for a couple of the members, there are ribbon-cuttings in the works. Be sure to visit our new members and tell them how proud we are to have them as part of our Chamber of Commerce.

BETHEL COLLEGE MARKER DEDICATION
Be sure to come out at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13 to witness a Kentucky Historical Highway Marker commemorating Bethel College. The marker will be unveiled in front of First Southern National Bank at 104 Bethel Street in Russellville.

“Bethel Shopping Center and the Bethel Dipper bear the Bethel name, but many residents do not know that the origin was a college whose campus occupied there long ago. The marker will summarize the history of the college for all to see,” local Historian Evelyn Richardson said to the News-Democrat & Leader.

MEMBER-TO-MEMBER: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR NOV. 24, 2015

From Ryan Craig
Executive Director
Logan County Chamber of Commerce
ryancraig@loganchamber.com

YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM’S AMBITIOUS PROJECT
It was a great idea developed by several members of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce and with the unwavering support of both school system superintendents Youth Leadership Logan was created and has been an unequivocal success.
Still, even with all the accolades so far, the group of sophomores from Logan County and Russellville high schools has gone far above what anyone would have thought with their ambitious project this year.

The Youth Leadership Program has decided to do a can food drive as their community project.  The drop off locations will be the Family Resource Centers at Russellville and Logan County high schools.
The drive will begin in Dec. 1, 2015 through Feb. 5, 2016.  There will also be drop box locations in the lobby of each high school during the Clash of the Cats games in January and February.  Please help these students reach their goal of 1,500 cans or non-perishable food items.  All food collected will help local food banks restock after the Holiday rush.

Though the students come from rival schools, in just a few minutes earlier this month they came together to draft a plan that will help many.
Let’s all make plans to spread the word about the project and make plans to give to a cause.

We should all be proud we belong to a Chamber that supports such a group of teens and be proud to live in a place with so much potential for our future.

GERALD PRINTING WINS AWARD FOR FESTIVAL LOGO

Also, Gerald Printing also won gold for best Rackcard/Brochure/eBrochure and was named Best of Show.
